She created commotion in Savannah, Georgia, causing ramp closures and two-hour traffic delays. She’d been on the loose for months – and she was hungry, tired, and in a STATE OF PANIC. It was a recipe for disaster as cars whizzed by at 70 MPH. I was on the hunt for Hannibal, a 1,500-pound bull who miraculously busted out of a squeeze chute to escape a slaughterhouse and avoid ritual sacrifice. A whole lot of people had already tried on foot, horseback, and even by helicopter. But he was smarter than all of us. He sure didn’t make it easy. I got a call from the slaughterhouse… busy with business for the “Feast of Sacrifice”. They said, “A sheep just gave birth on the truck. We’re taking the mom. If you hurry, you can have the baby.” I didn’t wait two minutes to jump in my truck. Not long after that, I’ve got this little peanut in my arms on our way to safety. - [Brianna & Winter](https://skylandssanctuary.org/brianna-winter/): On December 27th, 2018 Mike received a telephone call at about 2:45 am from a police officer friend named Brian. He was saying there was a cow that had jumped out of a transport truck right onto route 80 and that she was running down the side of the highway. Mike hooked up the truck and they took the trailer to the location as fast as they could. Paterson Police, New Jersey State Police, Paterson Animal Control, and two helpful tow truck drivers who had stopped to assist had roped her with a long strap and had herded her to
- [Freddie](https://skylandssanctuary.org/freddie/): Freddie escaped the slaughterhouse on January 21st of 2016. It was a small live market slaughterhouse in Queens New York. He escaped while being unloaded from a truck and was running the streets. A friend called Mike and said, “…did you see that a bull escaped and is running the streets of Queens?” Immediately, Mike grabbed the trailer and drove toward Queens. He was calling the police and everyone he could think of to find out where Freddie was and where he would be taken. - [Bronx](https://skylandssanctuary.org/bronx/): Bronx was brought in by the Bronx animal control staff. Many times, animals are seen on the streets and are picked up with no real destination, so they are often brought to the nearest sanctuary. We weren’t told Bronxies story but we’re thankful he’s here now. Bronx is a smaller phantom breed rooster and he is so nice. He gets along well with the others in his areas. He has a really good personality. We love having him here at Skylands. - [Brooklyn](https://skylandssanctuary.org/brooklyn/): Brooklyn was found running the streets of Brooklyn, New York. He is a male of a special egg laying breed. He’s extremely beautiful, friendly, and is always nice to “his girls”. He’s the head rooster and even though he knows it, he’s a really good boy. Everyone agrees that he is very good looking and has a great personality. - [Robin](https://skylandssanctuary.org/robin/): Robin came to Skylands together with another turkey named Andy around July of 2015. They were supposed to be Thanksgiving birds. They are called broad-breasted white turkeys. Someone just dropped them off mysteriously and didn’t wait to give an account of their story but we know they’re safe and sound now. They have such big personalities. They like to show off for the girl turkeys and look at themselves in the mirror. - [Angel](https://skylandssanctuary.org/angel/): Occasionally, Mike talks to local farmers. Around December of 2017, he spoke to a man who sells to farms. They had beef cattle. Mike said “you’re gonna give me one of the calves right? I could use one. I’ll take one and give him a good life.” “We’ll see we’ll see,” he said laughing. He liked Mike. So from then on, whenever he saw the man, Mike would say “where’s my calf? I want a female calf now. Don’t forget!” and they would laugh… it became kind of a thing.  Then one day it paid off. When he arrived at the scene, he saw that the man had 22 goats in a very tiny pen. Many of them were already sold to slaughter so those could not be saved. They were only willing to give one goat and five sheep. The goat was Churchill. Churchill was an older goat so he was not worth much money so they gave him up. Four of the guys bought piglets but the fifth guy did not. He was a 22-year-old. The farmer said, would you like this little runt because I can’t sell him. He said yes and took him not for the roast, but so that he could try to help him. He took him to his parents’ house and they didn’t know what to do with him. He wanted to see first-hand what went on in such a place.  They have 36,000 dairy cows in one place where they try to “normalize” their treatment of animals. They hold tours so that people can come to see what they do. They state that they “process” 80,000 pigs per year. He found himself on a giant farm that people go through on a bus, and where they take you through a milking parlor to see animals behind the glass. There is no smell, no

When he arrived at the location, he saw a tiny 2-day old calf. They said, “he’s with his mother because his mother is sick.” She was down with him on the ground. They warned him saying, “the mother is beautiful but she doesn’t like people”. Amazed at this tiny little calf on the floor, he began talking to him & petting him. While he was doing this, the mom walked over and started chewing his beard.
- [Jimmy](https://skylandssanctuary.org/jimmy/): Jimmy was the driving force behind Skylands Sanctuary. Before Jimmy, Mike had been rescuing animals for other sanctuaries. He did have a small piece of land that was fenced in with work trucks. This is where he kept three rescued goats, a bull and a couple of other rescued animals. Because he had begun to develop a reputation as a rescuer, Mike got a call from a woman and her daughter from Connecticut about a calf.
